How much damage is DIY doing to your retirement plan?

Thinking you’re saving yourself a little moolah by DIY’ing your retirement planning?

Confession time!

I’ve fallen for this and it’s cost me bucket loads of moolah over the years. I admit I made the same costly judgement call many D.I.Y’ers planning their retirement are acting out.

In 2015 I was fed up with the financial planning firm I partly owned. Licensed through a major bank. Short story, they were too interested in their own filthy fat bottom line than the clients we served. Not something that sits well with me, so I left. Another story for another day.

Starting another business. I needed a website quick smart. So people could find me.

One that looked professional and projected the right message.

First effort

First go, I paid someone a bucketload. While it looked nice and pretty, deep down I felt it wasn’t quite right. It looked like every other financial planning website.

I wasn’t like every other planner out there. We do things a little differently around here.

Rather than look for another expert. I thought I’d become king-ding-a-ling of marketing. Truth, I had no fricken idea.  I should have fired my own arse…

I did what most DIY’ers do. Search the far reaches of the web for the silver bullet. It was a fricken mind field. A bit like looking for a needle in a haystack. I spent hours upon hours reading blogs.

Let me tell you, free is not free…

Divine intervention

Then I stumbled across a marketing book that made sense.

Finding what I thought was the holy grail.  Halleluhu. Thinking I knew it all, aka marketing goo-roo. I proceeded to implement the concepts in the book. But I was struggling. I even enlisted some help from a business coach.

Bucket loads of more cash and feeling let down once again. Not counting potential clients lost because the site wasn’t resonating.

Something was missing. I couldn’t put my finger on it. It was annoying the crap out of me. I was so frustrated.

Feeling let down, I was reluctant to enlist another goo-roo…

A feeling you may have experienced if you’ve received bad advice in the past. It’s gut-wrenching.

Then COVID-19 hit, which provided a massive opportunity. A two-day workshop I’d been interested in was going virtual, aka marketing book that made sense. Usually presented live in Nashville USA.

Without hesitation, I signed up. Thinking it would solve all my problems.

Until…

…I put the new site together and had it reviewed by one of the coaches.

The penny finally dropped

The coach said it was good, and sure you can improve it but, you’d be better off getting an expert to help you. It would be quicker and you’d get the result your looking for.

After all this effort. Feeling like I’d gone twelve rounds only to be knocked out by Mike Tyson. Deep down I knew it. I had to get someone else to do it for me.

That’s exactly what I did, engaged a specialist in this space.

Drum roll, please…

I’m really happy with it and should have the new website up and running in the next month.  Something I should have realised years ago.  I’m just not a marketing goo-roo!

A journey many people go through planning their retirement.

Trying to figure it all out. Doing exactly what I did. Leaving money on the table, leaving it all too late and damaging their ability to live their best life. And don’t forget the compounding effect of lost time…
